After much anxious waiting and slavering I finally got to eat a nearly ripe Minnesota midget cantaloupe. Only three grew to any size. I think the seeds were a mix because two cantaloupes were smooth and one had ribs.
Here is the remaining smooth one - the other one I cut accidentally and ate tonight. Oops.
Here is the ribbed one.
Here is the first EVER nearly ripe cantaloupe I've ever grown. It is also the only Alaskan grown melon I've ever eaten. The seeds appear ripe, so I'm saving them.
Here is the cleaned melon, with a nickel for perspective. It smelled good and melon-ey. After slicing, the flesh had a slight tinge of pink. It was juicy and surprisingly sweet for the state of ripeness it was in. I shared half with my sister Jadeen. And gave a bite to my boy. Not much for a meal, but a real treat. It would take 15 or 20 of these little melons to make a dessert. We really like our melon around here.
These lilliputian melons will be a regular feature in the garden. Here's to five bites of home grown melon goodness. Thanks to the family friend who gave us the seeds!

There will never be anything to beat that melon you've grown at home. Well done!
The melons look like something I want to eat!
Found you through blotanical.
Hey Faith, those melons look yummy! I'd love to plant some melons once we get our garden going. Did you plant them out, or are they in the greenhouse? Did you mound them or grow vertical? Where'd you get your seed? Are they AK/Denali or just "northern variety?
Hi everyone and thanks! I saved seeds from the last two melons. Plickety - I got seeds from online and from a family friend. If you want I can send you some I saved. No guarantee the seeds got ripe enough to grow but I'm planting some next year. I started seeds mid April and finally planted out in a 3 gallon grow bag in the greenhouse in May with lots of compost. The seedlings are finicky. Online they are listed as Minnesota Midget Cantaloupes. Email me, my address is evealaska@yahoo.com.
What a treat! I would imagine that ripe melon in Alaska is quite an accomplishment with a short growing season.
totally get the melon pride, there's such anticipation watching them grow
That is the cutest melon ever. Minnesota Midget seed is listed in the D. Landreth Seed Company catalog.I wrote about them in a recent post. Are you experiencing Northern Lights now?
